Program Notes
By the early 19th century, it was standard practice for formal balls to begin with a “Grand March” in which dancers promenaded up the hall in a stately elegant procession, first as couples, then in lines of four, and finally in lines of eight, as dancers circulated around the ballroom. At a ball, the ‘Grand March” gave spectators an opportunity to admire the dancers. This recording “promenades” all the known guitar duets by French composer Monsieur Henry played on instruments of the period.
Little is known about Henry. We did find a duet by another composer of the time that is dedicated to a “Benigne” Henry, who may well be the same person. We have also seen duets by Henry for guitar and voice, violin, or clarinet. He was a teacher and composer in Paris, a vibrant center for guitar in the early 1800s. The duets on this album were published in 1818 as part of his Op. 21, a method book dedicated to his daughter. His music was still being played sixty-five years later, as we first encountered his “Grand March” in a collection of guitar music published in America in 1883.
In the early 19th century, musical improvisation was a “crown of distinction.” We have recreated the historic practice of improvising preludes and cadenzas on many pieces in this recording, drawing on descriptions and examples by Czerny, Giuliani, Carulli, and other composers of the period.
